Preparing for Your Motorcycle Licence Test

If you're about to embark on the journey of booking your Victorian Motorcycle Licence test, you'll need to make sure you have first completed several steps.

Obtained & Held Your Victorian Car Learners for a Minimum of 12 Months

If you do not already have a full Victorian car licence, you will need to have obtained and held your Victorian Car Learner Permit for a minimum of twelve months before you can apply for your Motorcycle Learner Permit.

Be Able to Ride a Bicycle

Riding a motorbike requires balance which is best learned by riding a bicycle. It's important to be confident maneuvering and balancing a bicycle before applying for your Motorcycle Licence.

Read the Victorian Rider Handbook

The Victorian Rider Handbook is the motorcycle equivalent of the Road to Solo Driving Handbook. It contains information relating to road law (as it specifically relates to motorcycle use), motorcycle roadcraft, and motorcycle safe driving practices.

The handbook is available to download as a free online PDF. You can find more information about the handbook here.

Complete the Two Day Learner's Permit Course

You will need to obtain your Victorian Motorcycle Learner's Permit by completing the two-day course. The Learner's Permit course covers everything from the basics of mounting and dismounting the motorbike, to gear changing, stopping, and safely maneuvering the bike. You will also need to complete a written knowledge test.

Optionally, you can also undertake our two hour Pre-Learners Course if you're not sure if you're ready to get your motorcycle licence, or if you haven't ridden in a long time and would like to refresh your memory.

Complete Your Check Ride

Your check ride will need to be completed a minimum of one month prior to your licence test. The check ride is a 3.5 hour on-road assessment to ensure you are ready to attempt the licence test. Once completed, you will be given a checklist to go away and practice for another month.

Booking Your Licence Test

Once you have undertaken all of the steps above, and you have held your licence for a minimum of three consecutive months (if you lose your licence at any stage, this time will reset and you will need to wait another three months) you are able to book in to complete your motorcycle licence test. You can do so by contacting Allstar Motorcycle Training on (03) 9706 8758 or by booking online.

If you book online use SAVE10 to receive a $10.00 discount (not applicable on public holidays).

Please ensure you bring with you your learner permit plastic card (digital licences can not be accepted at this time), check ride receipt, car licence (or car learners with your Hazard Perception test), and a second form of ID (i.e. passport, birth certificate, medicare card, credit card).

Converting Your Overseas Motorcycle Licence to a Victorian Licence

If you’re moving to Victoria, Australia, and hold a valid overseas motorcycle licence, you can convert it to a Victorian motorcycle licence. The process is straightforward but requires specific steps to ensure you meet Victorian motorbike licence regulations.

To do an overseas licence conversion, you first need to pass both the learner permit (2-day course) and the on-road licence assessment. Upon successful completion if you hold a full, unrestricted motorcycle licence and you have recorded and verified it at VicRoads you then gain a full unrestricted (probationary or automatic conditions may apply to some) motorcycle licence in Victoria.

Before you begin your licence conversion, you need to be over 18 years old, hold a Victorian car licence OR have passed the road law and hazard perception tests within the last 12 months. If you have any medical conditions or take any medication, these must be approved by VicRoads.

Step 1: Check Eligibility

First, confirm that your overseas licence is valid and not expired. You can usually convert licences from countries that have reciprocal agreements with Australia. If you are unsure, visit the VicRoads website for a comprehensive list of eligible countries.

Step 2: Take Your Overseas Licence to VicRoads

You will need to take your existing overseas car licence to VicRoads and convert it to a Victorian Drivers Licence. You will also need to take your overseas motorcycle licence and have it recorded and verified by VicRoads before you can proceed with the licence conversion.

Step 3: Pass the Learner Permit Course

Once your overseas licence has been recorded and verified by VicRoads, you will need to undertake the mandatory two day Learner Permit course. Contact Allstar Motorcycle Training on (03) 9706 8758 or book online to enrol in the course.

To prepare for the course, you will need to read the Victorian Rider Handbook which is available for free online.

Make sure you arrive to your course with all skin covered (long sleeves, pants, and sensible, closed-toed shoes). Allstar Motorcycle Training will provide you with a helmet, gloves and bike/scooter.

After you have passed the Learner Permit course, you can choose to undertake a Check Ride. While it is recommended, it is not mandatory to pass a Check Ride for overseas licence conversions.

If you book online use SAVE10 to receive a $10.00 discount (not applicable on public holidays).

Step 4: Pass the Licence Test

If you are converting an overseas motorbike licence to a Victorian motorbike licence, you can immediately book in for your Licence Test following completion of your Learner Permit Course, there is no mandatory waiting period between undertaking the two tests.

Step 5: Receive Your Victorian Licence

After successfully completing the necessary tests, you will receive your Victorian motorcycle licence. Keep in mind that if you were riding under a probationary licence in your home country, you might have a similar probation period in Victoria.

How to Obtain Your Motorcycle Licence in Victoria, Australia

Getting your motorcycle licence in Victoria is an exciting and fulfilling process, allowing you to explore the open roads with confidence. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone returning to riding, this step-by-step guide will help you navigate the requirements with ease.

Step 1: Obtain a Learner’s Permit

The first step in your journey is to apply for a Learner’s Permit. To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old. Start by visiting the VicRoads website to familiarize yourself with the motorcycle learner’s test. This test assesses your understanding of road rules, motorcycle operation, and safety practices.

To prepare for the test, you will need to read the Victorian Rider Handbook, which provides valuable information about riding safely. When you feel ready, book your test appointment with us at Allstar Motorcycle Training. After passing the test, you’ll receive your Learner’s Permit, allowing you to ride under certain conditions.

If you are not sure if you're ready to get your learner's permit, or you would like give motorbike riding a go before starting the process, consider undertaking our 2-hour Pre-Learners course. While not mandatory, the motorcycle pre-learners course is highly recommended for new riders. These courses offer hands-on instruction and cover crucial skills such as braking, cornering, and emergency maneuvers.

Step 2: Start Riding!

Once you’ve passed your learner permit test, you can ride any LAMS (learner legal) approved bike or scooter. (Please note that if you take the test on an automatic scooter, you will be restricted to a scooter). You should aim to include a mix of day and night riding, as well as various road conditions.

Make sure to regularly ride with someone who holds a full motorcycle licence. This experienced rider can provide guidance and feedback, helping you improve your skills. Many learners find it helpful to set goals for their riding practice, gradually building up their confidence and proficiency.

Your motorcycle learners permit expires after 15 months and cannot be renewed, so you'll have to make sure you come back to complete your Check Ride and Licence Test before your Learner's Permit expires.

Step 4: Pass the Motorcycle Check Ride

All learners must complete a 3.5-hour on-road check ride at least one calendar month prior to their motorcycle licence test. Remember to allow for this when booking if you are approaching the expiry date of your motorbike learners, as you cannot renew or extend your learners and will have to complete the two-day learner permit test again.

Check Rides are a great opportunity to ask your instructor any questions and fill any knowledge gaps you feel you may have. There is no limit to the number of check rides you can do, however you must complete at least one prior to your Licence test.

Step 4: Pass the Motorcycle Licence Test

When you feel confident and have completed your on-road Check Ride, it’s time to book your motorcycle licence test. This test includes a practical motorbike riding assessment.

The practical assessment evaluates your riding skills, including control, braking, and turning. It’s essential to practice these skills in a safe environment before taking the test.

To increase your chances of success, you can undertake as many Check Rides as you need in the lead-up to your test day.

Step 5: Obtain Your Full Licence

After passing the Check Ride and Licence Test, you’ll be issued a probationary motorcycle licence, known as an “R” licence. This probationary period lasts for 12 months. During this time, you must adhere to certain restrictions, such as displaying P plates and not riding with a passenger.

Once you complete your probationary period, you can apply for a full motorcycle licence. This transition allows you greater freedom on the road, but it’s essential to continue practicing safe riding habits.

If you hold an overseas motorbike licence that is full and unrestricted, you may be able to convert this over to a full Victorian motorbike licence. To do this, you need to successfully complete the two-day learner permit course followed by the on-road licence assessment. If you think you are eligible for this, please contact our office.
